What is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist?

A Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) is a food and nutrition expert who has met specific educational and professional prerequisites set forth by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The terms RD and RDN are used interchangeably.

Educational and Professional Requirements:

  • Degree: RDs must earn a master’s degree in a relevant field from an accredited university, which includes courses in nutrition, food science, biology, chemistry, and biochemistry, among others.

  • Accredited Program: They must complete a 1200-hour supervised practice program called a dietetic internship at an accredited healthcare facility, community agency, or a foodservice corporation. These hours are spent gaining professional experience working in hospitals, out-patient clinics, private practices, universities, food tech companies, food service centers and more.

  • Examination: RDs must pass a national examination administered by the CDR.

  • Continuing Education: To maintain their registration, RDs are required to complete continuing professional educational requirements to stay up to date with the latest nutrition science research and practices.
